Along with Bloodborne it was the first modern Fromsoft souls game using the modern engine and gameplay.
It was the first one where I'd say the combat was "good". It's almost arcade-like, it's definitely more linear.
What Fromsoft got right that many other games, especially in the action genre, did NOT, is what makes the game fun is defensive mechanics, not offensive.
A boss moveset, and how you can iframe dodge, shield, or parry it, is what makes the game such a success, NOT how you attack it, that's just pressing R1, no flashy combos or anything.
