It's really like governments didn't know about the internet until the late 2000s. They've been trying to kill it ever since. The hordes of phoneposting retard normies and third-worlders didn't help either.

Despite having far less people, the internet was much more active back then, you could find random forums or chat rooms active with people all over the place. It really was like that, I remember it.

I guess now people are condensed into highly regulated mega platforms with AI moderation, filters, IP blocks, phone verification, strict rules, even 4chan and Cloudflare are using browser fingerprinting now, something people thought wasn't a real world threat. Almost none of them are indexed by search engines.

Shock sites were popular in the 2000s, the guy getting fucked by a horse went from a shock video you sent your friends to distribution of illegal pornography, basically a metaphor for how the entire internet is now. Just some giant corporate glownigg3r digital prison to profit, restrict, arrest, censor, spy, suppress, control.
