They compete with their neighbors where previously their neighbors were their relatives. Grandma is just someone to call once a year until she dies instead of being around to take care of the kids (they pay strangers to do this instead).

They vote for change instead of having the ability to exercise real power locally. Meanwhile, elites have always and continue to live in multigenerational estates.
