most drugs dont fry your brain or do permenant damage, even with heavy opiates as long as you dont die its not going to harm your health permenantly
sure you can do ketamine to the point of having bladder issues but you can drink until you have a seizure and die, drugs only have the potential to be harmful if youre uneducated about the substances or if you are irresponsible

at some point the effects get irregular and some days are okay and then it throws you into some kind of mania which makes you do really dumb impulsive things that are more embarrassing than harmful
I can function after a week off but it's not the same for tasks demanding physical or mental effort obviously, but some other things are more enjoyable. The first week is really shit because it makes you extremely avoidant of people and perhaps a bit paranoid or anxious.
