the vast majority of all large-scale and expensive media projects play it too safe and get too predictable
I think that's a big reason why I keep sinking further and further into ones that are smaller productions or ones that just expect no mainstream appeal like manga, vn's, and novels.
One of my friends got me into xianxia novels recently and it's been really neat.
I still would say I enjoy anime regardless even if I find that there's less and less of it that feels like I haven't seen it before as I get older. It's neat when artists push limits and expectations.
