in ancient rome valentines day was a festival where men slaughtered goats and made thongs out of the goathides then went around whipping women with the thongs and some women even lined up in the streets because they believe it increased fertility

NEET… Anonymous… he's just like me…
This story is interesting in that it avoids a dilemma that always intrigues me whenever I read about anything having to do with identity in the ancient world, which is, how in the world, without realistic paintings or photographs, and during a time when most people never left their town, was anyone really able to find or confirm the identity of anyone else?
Never mind the identity of just common peasants, but what would really be stopping me assuming I have just a bit of wealth, from strolling into peasant village and saying that I am Ceasar, when no one there would have seen Ceasar before to confirm?

I guess they did have busts.

You'd be missing a legion of soldiers wearing uniform armor and weapons.

People weren't fucking retarded, they'd know you're not the emperor.

They were smarter than modern day people because they haven't suffered as many generations of mutations, particularly since the population boom of the 20th century going from 1 billion to 8 billion.

Over time animals lose genetic information through mutation, not gain it.
