The universe is still expanding from the residual forces of the big bang as noted by keppler, but if we are expanding into a vacuum then eventually the universe will have to come to a halt and start receding unto itself because the laws of gravity states that matter attracts matter. Then the universe will contract into a single point in space-time and the nuculear forces therein will spark another big bang and a new universe will be born.
