The problem is the language and ambiguity of words.
If Kanji were a problem they would have started phasing it out, but in the time where Japan was occupied by America it was found that the Japanese were more literate than Americans.

koreans phased out their chinese-style writing system for a phonetic one a while ago and are now much better off. i think japan keeps it for the same reason america uses imperial measurement units: it's not ideal but no one feels like learning something new.

Except that America using Imperial is pretty pointless while Japan using Kanji helps them communicate with the Chinese.
Even if they can't speak the same language, the kanji are similar enough that they can communicate in writting.

Uhh… Maybe like super basic ideas. Unless you mean a few hundred years ago.

It's more like the reason that english has been resistant to spelling reform, and still has spellings like through tough though thought etc.

People are both used to these spellings, and proud of having learned them.

I've spoken to some guys about Japanese stuff.
They say that knowing Kanji helps them deal with foreign business stuff.
